Change your clocks, Change your batteries

Daylight-saving time ends Sunday, November 6, and the
members of East Greenwich Township Fire & Rescue would like to remind you to
change and test the batteries in your Smoke Alarms and Carbon Monoxide
detectors. This message is simple and the habit can be lifesaving.

According to the National Fire
Protection Association (NFPA), roughly two-thirds of home fire deaths occurred
in homes without working smoke alarms. Working smoke alarms increase the chance
of surviving a home fire by 50 percent.

For decades, firefighters have used the time change as
a reminder for residents to change their Smoke Alarm batteries this year we
would like to remind our residents to change the batteries in their Carbon
Monoxide Alarms also.

EGTFR has the following tips on Smoke and Carbon
Monoxide Detectors:

Test the detectors once a month.
Replace batteries in all smoke alarms and CO alarms
twice a year.
Don't "borrow" or remove batteries from smoke
& CO alarms even temporarily.
Regularly vacuum or dust smoke & CO alarms to keep
them working properly.
Replace smoke alarms every 10 years.
Don't paint over smoke or CO alarms.

The members of East Greenwich Township Fire & Rescue would like to extend our deepest sympathy to the Iannelli family.A Loss for East Greenwich TownshipYou may have noticed driving around town that our flags have been lowered to half-staff. This is being done in honor of East Greenwich resident Ryan Iannelli who died Wednesday September 28th serving our Country in Afghanistan.Growing up Ryan’s first love was his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, second was his love for baseball. He was a 2002 graduate of Kingsway High School and was very proud of being a dragon. During his time at Kingsway Ryan was the president of his senior class, a member of the national honor society and the captain of the 2002 Tri-County Conference Champion Kingsway Dragons baseball team. Ryan went on to spend four years at Oral Roberts University in Tulsa, Oklahoma before joining the U.S. Marines. He was assigned to Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron 269, Air Group 29, 2nd Marine Air Wing, II Expeditionary Force, at the Marine Corps Air Station in New River, North Carolina. Ryan operated the AH-1W Super Cobra, a twin engine craft capable of high-speed, low-altitude flight that is used, among other functions to support other assault helicopters and troops. The Township will be placing flags along Kings Highway in support of the Iannelli family while they grieve for their son who gave the ultimate sacrifice. Ryan was someone who left a lasting impression on anyone he met and will be greatly missed by all.The Iannelli family has requested that mourners and those who want to honor Ryan send donations to the Wounded Warriors Project, rather than flowers. Wounded Warriors aims to help those suffering service-related injuries on or after 9/11. The group helps heal physical and psychological wounds, as well as adjust economically back home, and to stay connected to comrades. One can donate on the group’s website, www.woundedwarriorproject.org or call 877-832-6997Please join the Iannelli family for a service celebrating Ryan’s life on Sat.
